Upchurch’s First Edition Album Hits No. 1 Worldwide

Upchurch has turned a low-key album release into another major chart moment.

His new album, First Edition (Side A), reached No. 1 on the worldwide iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap Albums chart shortly after its release. What makes the accomplishment even more impressive is how little traditional promotion surrounded the project.

There was no long preorder campaign, no exact release date announced weeks in advance and no nonstop run of promotional posts and videos. Upchurch gave his supporters a short notice, released the album and allowed the music to speak for itself.

Within hours, First Edition (Side A) had already climbed to No. 3 on the United States iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap Albums chart. The album continued gaining ground until it reached the top of the worldwide genre ranking.

Released September 20 through Mud to Gold Records, the project contains 17 songs and runs for just over an hour. The tracklist includes recent releases such as “Throw Away,” “Heart Break” and “Music City Makes a Killin,” along with new titles including “Holler Boys 2.0,” “Made for Lights” and “Been Behind.”

The achievement says as much about Upchurch’s audience as it does about the album itself. Many major releases arrive with label-backed advertising, interviews, playlist promotion and weeks of buildup. Upchurch did not need any of that to get his supporters moving.

He has spent years building a direct relationship with his audience, and when he releases something new, they respond. That kind of loyalty cannot be manufactured through a marketing campaign.

The title Side A also means this release is only part of the full project. Upchurch has already revealed that Side B is planned to follow, giving fans even more music to look forward to.

Chart positions can change quickly, but reaching No. 1 worldwide with an independent album and very little buildup is difficult to ignore. Upchurch did not spend weeks telling everyone how big the album would be.

He dropped it, and his fans made it big.

This is a win for Upchurch, a win for the fans and a win for the whole genre.
