Moccasin Creek Talks Country Rap Throwdown, Staying in His Lane, and Why Country Rap Has Lasted Longer Than Folks Ever Dreamed

Moccasin Creek has been around long enough to know when something is real.

He’s seen country rap grow from a lane people doubted into a movement with OGs, younger artists, road-tested crews, internet-era acts, and fans still showing up loud. Now, with the Country Rap Throwdown gaining steam, Moccasin Creek is watching another chapter unfold, but he’s doing it his way.

He’s not chasing every trend. He’s not pretending to know every new name online. He’s keeping his circle tight, staying in his lane, and laughing about the fact that country rap has lasted long enough to have a real generation gap.

We caught up with Moccasin Creek to talk about the Throwdown, what artists need to bring to the table, and why this genre has already gone way further than a lot of people ever expected.

Country Rap News: What’s been your favorite Country Rap Throwdown moment so far that made you think, “Yeah, this is working?”

Moccasin Creek:

“Oh, from the very first one in South Carolina to kick it all off. It was bonkers. No particular favorite moment, but from the very first show we were able to say, ‘yeah, it’s working.’”

Country Rap News: When you’re selecting artists for a Throwdown stop, what qualities are you looking for beyond just music numbers and social media followers?

Moccasin Creek:

“Well, I don’t select them so I can’t say for sure. It’s not my call. It’s a group thing more so than anything.”

“As long as whoever is being added is just a good person, gets along with everyone and has some experience out there on the road, it makes more sense to add.”

“But at the same time, with it being the first year, we had to see how things were going to go in order to see what route to take for next year. So, I will have to get back with you on that one.”

Country Rap News: Has the Throwdown changed your perspective on the current state of country rap and the artists coming up in the genre?

This is where Moccasin Creek gave the kind of answer only an artist who has been through the miles can give.

Moccasin Creek: “It hasn’t changed my perspective personally. I’m at an age, where I can’t let anything outside of my immediate circle and straight ahead tunnel vision bother me. I’m old and beaten down.”

“I stick to my own lane and when I get home, I have a very small people that I stay in constant communication with. I kind of don’t do the internet much anymore, so I can’t give an honest answer on upcoming artists because I don’t know many of them at this point.”

“Not in a negative way. I just mean, even in the ‘real world,’ you don’t see a lot of 48-50 year old men hanging out at the bar or kicking it with 22 and 23 year olds. That’s just real life.”

Then came the line that might be the most Moccasin Creek answer possible.

Moccasin Creek:

“That doesn’t mean that we can’t work and be friends, but I still have a Nintendo. What kind of conversations can I have with a youngin that gets paid to stream themselves playing video games online in some spaceship ass computer chair?”

“LOL Just saying, there’s a giant age gap and that’s cool to see actually. That means this thing has run wayyyyyyy longer than folks ever DREAMED it would.”

That right there is the bigger story. Country rap has been around long enough now to have different generations inside the same movement. The older road dogs and the younger internet-era artists may come from different worlds, but they’re still meeting on the same stages.

Country Rap News: Where do you see the Country Rap Throwdown going over the next couple of years?

Moccasin Creek:

“ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.”

No long speech needed on that one.

Country Rap News: What’s one thing you think independent artists should stop doing, and one thing they should start doing?

Moccasin Creek:

“Stop comparing to anyone other than yourself.”

“Start building a solid team you can trust.”

That advice is simple, but it hits. In a business where everybody is watching numbers, posts, comments, streams, and flyers, Moccasin Creek’s message is to stop staring sideways and start building forward.

Country Rap News: Has there been an artist on one of the Throwdown shows who came in as a lesser-known name, but left you thinking, “They’re going to make it”?

Moccasin Creek:

“Thus far, it’s been the same group of fellas performing everywhere.”

“Next year when adding many more artists to many more dates, I will be able to give you a better answer.”

And that’s where the door cracks open.

More artists. More dates. More chances for somebody new to step up and prove they belong. But even with the Throwdown growing, the center of this conversation is Moccasin Creek himself, an artist who has seen country rap change, stretch, survive, and keep rolling.

He may not be chasing every new trend online, but he’s still standing in a genre that outlasted the jokes, outgrew the doubters, and made it far enough for him to laugh about still having a Nintendo.

Country Rap didn’t just survive.

It got old enough for Moccasin Creek to look around and say, “This thing has run wayyyyyyy longer than folks ever DREAMED it would.”
